Drummer/Drum
Builder/Luthier
Born in the late 50’s, Chris Boehme grew up in
the San
Fernando Valley, just
north
of LA.
He spent most of his summers
at Venice
Beach
at his aunt and uncle’s house. This
is
where Chris’s started his first band with his cousin. After
getting his first drum set from
Woolworth’s for Christmas, Chris started to add more drums
and
hardware from
the Sears catalog.
By now they were
starting to play gigs for family, friends and local school talent
contests.
Back in the valley Chris got
into bands with fellow schoolmates and played at their
school Friday dances.
In 1976, Chris
played in the Battle
of the Bands at the Hollywood Bowl. From
that point everything seemed to take off.
The father of one of
Chris’ band mates owned a music store
and was a music
teacher at Cal State Northridge. One
day
he asked the band if they wanted to go to CSUN for the summer music
program.
They all went and got to meet
a
lot of great players.
Chris started to
take lessons from Dave Levine who was attending CSUN as music major. At
the same time Chris was helping his cousin
put a band together to help show case her as a singer and
songwriter.
One
day
she got a call that Berry Gordy wanted to hear her songs, so they
packed up their
gear and went to a sound stage in Hollywood
where they played a handful of her original songs.
About a week later she got a
contract with
Motown Records and Teena Marie was born.
Chris
got a call to go on the road
with a club band and I hit the road for about two years off and on. When
it was time to record Teena’s first
album Chris had to great opportunity to work with Rick James and the
Stone City
Band. He worked on all of Teena’s albums and tours when she
was
with Motown.
In 1984 Chris was asked to
play for the LA
Olympics. He got his first endorsements form Ziljian, Tama and Remo.
Chris
currently is working with a handful
of different bands, backing singers, worship bands and studio
work.
